Why do warehouses and estates need canopies?
Warehouses and industrial estates need canopies because a loading bay, a compound or a process area has to keep working through the weather, and stock, plant and staff need cover that a building extension is too slow or too costly to provide. A canopy gives that cover in weeks, fixed to the existing steel or a new base.
Covered loading means goods, pallets and vehicles stay dry at the dock instead of the load being exposed the moment it clears the roller shutter, which matters for stock that damages in rain and for keeping the floor safe underfoot. A canopy also adds usable covered floor space, an outdoor store, a covered walkway or a sheltered smoking or cycle area, without the cost and time of a full building extension.
How much does an industrial canopy cost?
An industrial or warehouse canopy costs from around £12,000 to £50,000 or more, installed. These are indicative ranges to confirm at a site survey, not fixed prices, because the figure moves with the span, the structural loading, the foundations and how much of the existing building the canopy fixes to.
The main drivers are the clear span and the loading the frame has to carry, the foundations (fixing to a sound existing steel frame or slab costs less than new pad footings), the roof material (polycarbonate for daylight or solid sheet for full weather cover), and site access for a live operation. What standards apply to industrial canopies?
An industrial canopy is engineered to the structural Eurocodes, principally BS EN 1991 for wind and snow loading, and installed to meet the Building Regulations for structural safety on a working commercial site. A specifier should expect load calculations, CAD drawings and a specification for every structure we design.
On an industrial site the design also has to account for workplace access and vehicle movement, keeping clear headroom and sightlines for HGVs, forklifts and pedestrians around the loading bay, and for fire, keeping escape routes and any fire-rated separation clear of the new structure. Frames are powder-coated steel finished to any RAL colour, roofs are 5mm or 8mm water-resistant polycarbonate with a 99% UV filter or a tensioned architectural fabric, and every joint uses a glazing system with a sealed double rubber bead.
How do you install canopies on a live industrial site?
We install industrial canopies with our own teams across England, Scotland and Wales in four stages: a site survey, a CAD design and specification for sign-off, UK manufacture of the frame and roof, then groundworks and the on-site build. Where a sound existing steel frame or slab is in place we fix the canopy to it and avoid new foundations; where it is not, we form new pad footings.
