What is a door canopy?
A door canopy is a small, wall-fixed roof over a doorway that keeps rain off the entrance and anyone standing at it, built from a powder-coated steel or aluminium frame with a polycarbonate roof. It is also called an over-door canopy or a porch canopy, and it is the smallest structure we make.
We fit door canopies to the front doors of homes and to communal, side and workplace entrances, including flats, housing schemes, offices and public buildings. A house canopy usually covers one doorway; a communal or workplace entrance often needs a wider canopy or more than one, sized to the doorway and the wall it fixes to.
Which door canopy is best?
The best door canopy is the one matched to the doorway and the wall it fixes to, so a specifier compares three things: the form (a flat lean-to canopy that sits close to the wall, or a curved canopy with more projection and headroom), the frame material (powder-coated steel for strength on a wider communal entrance, aluminium for a lighter fixing on a rendered or lightweight wall), and the roof and finish.
For a single house door, a compact lean-to canopy in a colour to match the woodwork or brickwork usually does the job. For a block of flats or a workplace side entrance, we often specify a wider or curved canopy in aluminium or steel to cover more of the step and any people waiting at the door, sometimes alongside a carport or cycle store on the same site. Do door canopies need planning permission?
A door canopy on a house is usually permitted development, so it does not normally need a planning application, provided it stays within the size and projection limits that apply to a domestic front or side door. It is still worth checking before you order if the house is listed or in a conservation area.
A canopy on a communal entrance, a block of flats, a listed building or a public or workplace building does not carry the same automatic permitted-development rights as a single house, so it may need a planning check or, on a listed building, listed-building consent. We can advise early on what a particular entrance is likely to need, and we supply drawings and a specification if your project needs one for a planning or building-control application.

Most house canopies are a one-day fit.

A communal or multi-doorway job is programmed to keep the entrance usable throughout, and on an older or rendered wall we check the fixing before we start so the canopy sits securely.
How long does a door canopy last?
A door canopy lasts 15 to 25 years, because the powder-coated steel or aluminium frame resists corrosion and the polycarbonate roof carries a long-life 99% UV filter that keeps it from yellowing or going brittle. The frame is the long-life part, and the roof sheet is the part most likely to need replacing first.
A powder-coated frame needs little more than an occasional clean, and aluminium is naturally corrosion-resistant, which suits an exposed or coastal doorway. Where a roof sheet does mark, fade or crack after years of weather, we can replace it without taking down the frame, and we re-cover and refurbish existing door canopies as well as fitting new ones.
